Okay, so I'm sure everyone's read about this over @spot's profile, and here's my work in progress of a design, I'm not sure on whether I like it or not yet, and the colours will probably change slightly.
I like the set up, The colours could use some change up. reminds me of a word document. but it seems like it would be very easy to navigate around, especially for new users who do not know where everything is, and that is important.
Its easily used, clear, but I don't like white. It hurts my eyes looking at for several minutes. I'm for darker colours, it could be anything even from light blue to grey etc.
The Word doc style, well, if I end up on NR not knowing about the site, I would never guess this is a gamers' site. I'd bet for literature or so. Thats it! :]

oki doki! even though my negative critique doesn't mean I don't appreciate your design! I see great parts both in yours and spot's to mix or use

nah, this is not my business. it'd look like the paint of a 3yrs old

So far all that's really laid out is the menu and header, the content I imagine would remain pretty similar to how it is currently. See other comment on the colours.

It's a little TOO clean....there's really no defining traits. It's very usable, though; if you added some more color or pizazz it could turn out really well.
Needs more contrast, tbh. Like Monchee said, staring at white all the time can hurt someones eyes. In my experience staring a black all the time can also strain them, so work towards getting a balance between the two, and please move away from the "cover letter/word doc" layout scheme. That just looks retarded.

Why use large words, when diminutive ones will suffice?
It's not the filler text that I'm talking about, it's the lack of action happening across the page, basically. The second version's better, but it's got a ways to go, tbh.

Yes, that is what I was thinking, but didn't peg a verbal statement for it.
Reminds me of a Word doc.

Well, choosing the colour scheme has been the hardest part: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/830871/img_0008.jpg

yes, that's fair, currently it's just filler text to get the baseline grid setup (designer terming

The More I look at it, the more i seem to like the Layout. The Oranges, Reds and blacks all go together well.

I wanted to focus on the usability first, as my current annoyance with this redesign is that menu thing.
We can always make it dirty later, but I'm a minimalist by nature.

"cover letter/word doc" layout scheme is just filler text so I can align the type to a baseline grid correctly.
And I've gone for a slightly more neutral color in the second version (I'll upload a screenshot in a minute.)

There's nothing wrong with that, but honestly, it's probably not gonna get very much attention without at least SOME details more than that.

The problem is, I can't do any better. My design theory's suck. I just make a base and let other people tell me what to do to improve upon it.
